Busted! Don’t Believe These Metal Roofing Myths!
As a home is one of the most expensive purchases you will make in your lifetime, it only makes sense to protect that investment with a roof that will stand the test of time. With several roofing options available in the market, metal roofing has gained popularity in the residential sector in recent years. Metal roofing is tough, has longevity, energy efficiency, and provides superior protection for your home.
However, despite the popularity, there is a growing number of myths and misconceptions floating around about metal roofs. Believing in these falsehoods will dissuade you from installing a durable roof that could last you decades with little to no maintenance. To help you steer clear of these misconceptions, STOP Roofing Inc. has debunked three of the most widely believed myths about metal roofing.
Myth 1: A metal roof makes noise when it rains
Our premium metal system is fastened directly to the existing roof. The metal includes contours with no strapping, so our product makes the same or less noise as regular shingles.
This myth has come about from long sheet barn steel, which is strapped to the roof with one-inch spruce strapping leaving a space between the metal and the existing roof. This is called the hollow drum effect, which means the long sheet steel has one rib and six to nine inches of flat steel followed by another rib. When the rain hits the long sheet barn steel, it makes a lot of noise. So, if you want a roof that is quiet when it rains, definitely go with our premium metal roof!
Myth 2: Metal roof has to be grounded
Not at all true! A metal roof does not need to be grounded. Although metal does conduct electricity when lightning strikes a roof, metal is a non-combustible product like other roofing materials. Lightning will strike whichever material that will give the least resistance as a path to the ground. Therefore a metal roof won’t pose any greater risk of lightning strikes than a standard roof on the same structure.
As an electrical conductor and a non-combustible material, a metal roof has a zero risk of damage from a lightning strike compared to a regular shingle roof that could be combustible.
Myth 3: A metal roof is very expensive
We have come across customers deciding to purchase a new roof, where they mostly don’t research the required information to make a clear decisive decision. Some of them will believe a warranty paper that will state a specific lifespan of a regular shingled roof instead of researching and getting more informed opinions on other options, that is, metal roofing. That’s where they fall for one of the biggest myths in the roofing industry of steel being more expensive than a regular shingled roof.
For example, when you spend around ten to fifteen thousand dollars on a regular shingle roof and then later in eight to twelve years, you spend that same amount, if not more, to repair or replace it. When you choose metal roofing, you make one purchase, and it will actually last a lifetime.
So, when you buy one of your home’s biggest investments, being a customer, you need to keep in mind that your job is to research and get adequate information about various types of roofs from more than one reputable source.
